I love the personal power and transformations I see over the period of a couple of weeks of experiencing the magic of the European Alps.  My clients have been cancer survivers, recently widowed, singles looking to travel in a supportive group, father/daughter…….  The list is long and varied with the common thread of enjoying a life altering experience.

Everyday is new pulling one deeply into the present moment.  Immersed in clean mountain air, French and Italian cuisine prepared with care, scenic comfortable lodging.  Eat, explore, sleep.  It’s easy to feel any cares lift.

After 50 and certainly 60, we never quite know what’s around the corner.  I always tell my clients “If it’s important, do it now!”

This coming June/July we’re visiting exquisite Venice and the white mountains of the Dolomite Alps.  Please come join us.  You’ll be happy you did!

4.   Alignment!  We’re put together to function with the least amount of effort when we use good alignment.  That means being able to drop a plumb line from your mid-ear to your shoulder and to your hip.  Set up your seat so that your hips are higher than your knees which helps to facilitate the lumbar and cervical curves.  Feel your scapula on the back of the seat and your head against the headrest.  Avoid hunching over the wheel.

3.  Stretch & move.  Keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, rotate the shoulders side to side then over arch and alternately curve under.  Another good movement is to squeeze together your shoulder blades and release alternately.  This brings new circulation to your back muscles.

2.  Assist your lumbar curve.  Even with the best of seats, when it comes to a longer roadtrip, my back thanks me for bringing along an external lumbar pillow.  What I’ve found works the best is a small down pillow in a stuff sack.  I use my backpacking pillow that seems to go everywhere with me.  Airplanes too!

1.  Use your cruise control whenever safely possible.  When your right foot is constantly monitoring the pressure to the gas pedal, it can result in a sticky and often angry Sacro Iliac (SI) joint.  This is one of the most common complaint I get as a therapist.  Also watch the angle of the right foot and keep the toe and heel in alignment, avoiding letting the toe point out.  When using cruise control, place both feet on the mat with the knees bent.  Big difference from having the foot on the gas pedal!

The Mont Blanc Massif is the home to the highest mountain in the European Alps. “La Dame Blanche” (French for “The White Lady”) Le Mont Blanc/Monte Bianco tours over France, Italy & Switzerland at 15,782′ in this magical corner of convergence.  J

World renounced climbers converge here, parasailers glide effortlessly over the Chamonix valley 10,000′ below, hikers trek among the wild alpenrose, villagers play chess on huge boards while tourists throng to fromageries, boulargaries and patissaries.  Remnants of the wars serve as reminders along the frontiers as glaciers sweep down the steep inclines and high mountain refuges serve cold beers and hot soups to hungry tourists.

It’s all here.  In every crevice, every flower, around each bend.  Castles, vineyards, thermes used by kings and queens with views of the grand dame herself.

Join us for a magical meeting of culture and nature as master photographer Christian Heeb guides the group through all possible shooting situations ending with Bastille Day!

The tour is based both in the Chamonix Valley, France and Courmayeur, Italy.  The Alps at their very best.   Suitable for hikers and non-hikers, photographic opportunities abound.  Spouses and non-photographers welcome!

• Downhill running/walking
• Increased levels of repetitive movement
• Pain or aching on the lateral side of the knee occurring during and after a period of exercise
• Pain over the greater trochanter of the hip (lateral hip)
• Snapping/popping in the bent leg over the lateral knee area
• Swelling in the lateral knee
• Weakness in the hip adductors (tensor latae fascia TFL and gluteus medius)
• Overstretched TFL/IT band due to uneven hips
• Pronation of foot strike

What can be done to alleviate these symptoms?

• Rest and/or decrease the time/distance of activity
• Stretch the TFL/It band (see exercises)
• Shorten your stride
• Correct pronation with shoes and/or inserts      
• Strengthen hip adductors
• Ice the affected area after activity
• Wrap or tape the knee
• Get professional help for releasing the IT band fascia
• Get professional help to even out the pelvic girdle
